KINETIC SKIN – kinetic facade for an energy storage tower

Client Stadtwerke Heidelberg / IBA Heidelberg  Year 2016  City Heidelberg, Germany

KINETIC SKIN is a kinetic facade structure inspired by the geometries of nature. The existing cylindrical-shaped storage center is transformed into a dynamic sculpture – the new icon of the city.

WHITEvoid together with LAVA Architects, A24 Landschaft, Transsolar Energietechnik and Priedemann Fassadenberatung won the design competition for the energy park and energy storage tower in Heidelberg, which will be completed in 2019.

Around 11,000 diamond-shaped thin metal plates are integrated in the mesh of the steel net. The sub-construction allows a wind-induced rotation of the platelets on both sides. The matte surface of the metal breaks the sunlight at different angles depending on the sun position. This results in a dynamic, constantly changing surface of light and shadow. Waves caused by wind run over the front building skin and bring them to life.
