VEKTOR is the latest audiovisual installation by light artist Christopher Bauder at Kraftwerk Berlin. In his most personal work to date, Bauder fuses kinetic light from 50 moving lasers with a self-composed three-dimensional soundscape to create a synaesthetic work of art. Moments and memories from his life are processed into an abstract light art experience. Visitors are submerged in a wondrously fascinating sound and imagescape. With VEKTOR at Kraftwerk Berlin, Bauder is also returning to one of his absolute favourite venues. After SKALAR and DEEP WEB, VEKTOR is his third monumental installation in this unique industrial cathedral.

DIALOGUE is a large-scale light art installation by artist Christopher Bauder commissioned by Royal Commission for Riyadh City for Noor Riyadh Light Art Festival 2023. The city-wide show transforms two of the most iconic towers on the Riyadh skyline into living characters that interact with each other and communicate through light and sound. The towers send light signals as a non-verbal exchange to express abstract emotions. Sometimes they appear friendly and playful, sometimes curious and inquisitive, sometimes angry or frustrated.

AXION AT THE NOOR FESTIVAL IN RIYADH



From 3 to 19 of November AXION, a large-scale light installation is presented at Noor Riyadh, a citywide annual festival of light and art. Like a giant spaceship, the AXION artwork by light artist Christopher Bauder and composer and musician KiNK sits in the middle of the desert. Every evening after sunset, the sculpture transforms into a giant light modulator. The pulsating portal of light and space captivates the viewer by constantly morphing in appearance and mood. It is superhuman in size, yet fleeting and fluid, distorting familiar perceptions of space and sound.

It’s an absolute world record in its size and complexity: Our work for the London based concert series ABBA Voyage consists of 30,000 moving light points.

Using winches, mirror discs and newly developed pixel strings, KINETIC LIGHTS and WHITEvoid created an installation that fits to the music perfectly and is prolonged into the digital realm on huge screens by world-renowned agency Industrial Light and Magic. An extraordinary experience in which the real and digital world is hardly distinguishable.

DARK MATTER is a parallel cosmos of expansive light installations in which the boundaries between the real and the digital world become blurred. Within the pitch-black rooms of a converted factory, the visitor embarks on a journey through seven partly interactive works. Light, movement and sound fuse into emotional choreographies of luminous shapes and colors. Behind this pioneering experience is light artist Christopher Bauder and his design studio WHITEvoid.

SKALAR IN AMSTERDAM THIS WINTER



In January 2020, light artist Christopher Bauder and musician Kangding Ray presented a new 360° version of their monumental audio-visual kinetic art installation SKALAR. Since its debut, SKALAR has delighted over a hundred thousand people and reshaped the landscape of modern art exhibitions.

SKALAR resides in the iconic Gashouder in Amsterdam from January 10 to February 5. As a special highlight, Christopher Bauder and Kanding Ray will play several exclusive SKALAR live shows — an expanded and intensified concert version of the animation cycle. In June 2019, Lune Rouge Productions launched their innovative multimedia entertainment project PY1 in Montreal, a traveling venue for multi-sensory experiences.

Our KINETIC CHANDELIER installation became part of this fantastic new venture and the centerpiece of the show “Through the Echoes” at the top of the PY1 pyramid. “Through the Echoes” is a unique multimedia production that combines technology with powerful storytelling.

HAKKASAN GRID – THE LARGEST PERMANENT KINETIC INSTALLATION IN THE US



The HAKKASAN GRID is a custom-built kinetic light installation for Hakkasan Nightclub at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas that sets the benchmark for luxury nightlife throughout the world and breaks down silos between entertainment, art, and technology. It is an immersive dancing ceiling that enhances the venue’s previous design and transforms the show experience for the club’s audiences.

The club unveiled HAKKASAN GRID during Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas (EDC) in May along with DJs sets by the EDM legends like Tiësto, Steve Aoki, and Calvin Harris.

FREQUENCIES AT THE CTM FESTIVAL IN HALLE AM BERGHAIN IN BERLIN



In January 2019, WHITEvoid presented FREQUENCIES as a part of CTM Festival’s 20th anniversary. Installed at Halle am Berghain along with a skating rink, the installation features a real-time synchronization of sound waves and light. KINETIC LIGHTS software analyses music and generates a specific color assigned to every frequency and beat. The colors move through light rods to the music and create a dazzling display in stark contrast to the brutalist architecture of the concrete hall.

With almost 180.000 mechanical platelets (so-called flip dots) which rotate by an electromagnetic pulse, ORBITAL is the largest flip dot installation in the world. The kinetic sculpture was designed and developed by WHITEvoid specifically for the customer center of Volkswagen’s Autostadt (car city) in Wolfsburg, Germany.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, light artist Christopher Bauder and his brother Marc were commissioned to create an extraordinary light installation called LICHTGRENZE (Border of Lights). From the 7th to the 9th of November 2014 the 15.3-kilometer frontier that once divided the city center was re-imagined in light by 8000 balloon lights all developed and produced by WHITEvoid. More than 1 Million people was taking part in the choreographed and televised balloon release event in the streets of Berlin on the last day of the installation.

The Mendelssohn Effektorium is a technically complex, but user-friendly and exceedingly fun installation at the Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Museum in Leipzig. The visitor becomes a conductor and by swinging the conductor´s baton decides upon the tempo of a musical piece. The LIVING SCULPTURE kinetic installation was created by WHITEvoid as the center piece for the Philips’ appearance at the Light+Building trade fair 2012 in Frankfurt.
The installation is composed of 24 movable triangular aluminum frames carrying 864 ultrathin glass OLEDs. Computer controlled slowly changing and evolving movement and luminance patterns accent the OLED specific mirror and light surface texture.

WHITEvoid designs DIGI STAGE, a video projector based digital stage lighting system with integrated depth camera tracking to pixel map the whole stage area. The system was initially commissioned for the theater play ‘Fanny and Alexander’ by director Sebastian Hartmann. The piece inspired by Ingmar Bergman’s movie was premiered in September 2011 at the Central Theater in Leipzig.

WHITEVOID ILLUMINATES BUGATTI AND SEAT FOR THE VW GROUP SHOW AT IAA FRANKFURT 2011



WHITEvoid created a kinetic light show to accompany the inaugural presentations of the spectacular Bugatti Veyron, the world’s fastest and most expensive street car, and the new Seat Exeo for the Volkswagen Group Show at the International Motor Show 2011 in Frankfurt. 80 KINETIC LIGHTS Tube light fixtures were specifically produced for this event to perform a spectacular ballet of lights.

CRYSTAL CHANDELIER, THE PERMANENT LIGHT ART INSTALLATION IN MOSCOW



CRYSTAL CHANDELIER is a permanent kinetic light art installation for the Tsvetnoy Central Market, a new department store in central Moscow. The hanging sculpture evokes the impression of a giant chandelier formed by crystal shaped light elements. The installation generates ever-changing shapes, movement and light animations with individual impressions for the day and night presentation.

WHITEvoid creates a black monolithic trade fair stand at the 100% Design in London as a stage for the specially developed kinetic light sculpture – THE WAVE. The sculptural hanging light arrangement forms generative wave patterns complimented by blue light animations, symbolizing the main element of Roca, water. Our design was awarded with the iF Communication Design Award and the DDC German Designers Club Award.

BREAKING ICE is an interactive table with a 3D multitouch surface in the shape of a floating iceberg. The exhibit is permanently installed at the UNESCO site iceberg museum in Ilulissat, Greenland.

WHITEVOID REALIZES A TIMELINE WALL FOR THE CONCENTRATION CAMP MEMORIAL FLOSSENBUERG



WHITEvoid was commissioned to edit and animate 25 chronological movies from existing historical video and photo footage and program a synchronizing software. All movies, additional static images and texts are synchronized and animated across 25 screens along a 18-meter wide timeline wall. The exhibit is part of the permanent exhibition of the museum.

WHITEVOID DEVELOPS INTERACTIVE EXHIBITS FOR BOMBARDIER



WHITEvoid designs two exhibits installed inside Bombardier trains at the InnoTrans trade fair in Berlin. The first interactive installation demonstrates the reduction of the environmental impact of trains by the material chosen for their construction. The second interactive installation uses a multichannel surround sound system and projections on the trains windows to simulate the actual sound change inside a moving train when using Bombardier’s various noise reduction products.

PROPOSAL FOR A TEMPORARY ART MONUMENT FOR THE 25 YEARS ANNIVERSARY FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL



LICHTGRENZE (Border of Lights) is a proposal for a temporary monument on the occasion of 25 years Fall of the Berlin Wall. 43,100 balloons, each equipped with a bright LED light inside, are to be placed along the old route of the Berlin Wall to mark the 43.1 km inner city border.

WHITEVOID CREATES A NEW WEBSITE FOR STRASSERAUF



WHITEvoid designs a website and a distinctive and unique brand icon for a new electricity provider in the German energy market, Strasserauf. The website features a 3D navigational environment which uses the paradigm of unfolding objects. It creates a playful interactive space that encourages visitors to explore the information within.

WHITEVOID PRESENTS THE KINETIC LIGHT ART PIECE CONSTELLATION AT THE SUISSE EMEX



WHITEvoid develops the CONSTELLATION for the trade fair stand of the Swiss design and building company, Messerli, at Suisse EMEX 2009 in Zurich, Switzerland. The installation consists of a flexible array of cable winches with LED light spheres. Each light fixture can be adjusted individually in height and luminance by the control software. By synchronizing position and light animation, complex shapes and light patterns can be generated within the array.

UNSTUCK INTERACTIVE EXHIBIT AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM BERLIN



UNSTUCK is an analog, but at the same time digital game which explores the relationship between food and faith. The game differentiates between religions by using dynamic lights and colors, also highlighting the progress of the game. The interactive game will be exhibited until February 28th, 2010 in the Jewish Museum Berlin.

WHITEVOID’S PRIVA TEXT PART OF A PERMANENT EXHIBITION AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM BERLIN



The PRIVA TEXT installation is text projected onto ‘intelligent’ glass screens. It was developed together with media artist Arnold Dreyblatt for the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Text snippets from letters of concentration camp inmates and written orders from Nazi officers are displayed via synchronized text tickers projected onto ‘intelligent’ glass walls. The glass sheets can be switched from opaque to transparent to hide or reveal the visual content behind.

WHITEVOID DEVELOPS 3D GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE FOR FUTURE TV SETS



WHITEvoid develops for Macrovision Corporation / ROVI USA a 3D graphical user interface and novel interaction principle for future TV sets and cable set-top boxes. A grid-based 3D folding menu structure makes full use of the latest developments in HD TV sets. The software will be delivered as a built-in solution on TV sets with integrated solid state drives and highspeed internet connection. Macrovision registered the project for a patent. The product will be released in 2012.

AT SMUKFEST DENMARK



WHITEvoid creates a large-scale interactive lounge object for SMUKfest, one of Denmark’s largest music festivals. The POLYGON PLAYGROUND offers room for up to 40 persons at a time to walk, sit and explore its multifaceted surfaces. The installation features a software aided 3D surface projection system to cover the object with a seamless 360-degree projection mapping and a sensory system to detect people’s positions and proximity.

WHITEVOID PRESENTS FLARE FACADE AT THE NEXT EXHIBITION



WHITEvoid presents the first prototype of FLARE, kinetic ambient reflection membrane, at the NEXT art & technology exhibition in Aarhus, Denmark. FLARE is a pneumatic building facade system which consists of a number of tiltable metal flake bodies. By reflecting ambient or direct sunlight the individual flakes of the system act like pixels formed by natural light.

WHITEvoid was commissioned by Oticon hearing aids USA to produce a new 360-degree movie for their trade show cinema. The production involved a 360-degree video shooting at Potsdamer Platz Berlin with a video resolution of 6000×800 pixels.

The MIDI GUN is part of the exhibition ‘strings – keys – sounds’ at the Museum of Design in Zurich, Switzerland. It will be open to the public from 11th September, 2007 and will run until 2nd March, 2008.
